Saturnalia is the feast at which the Romans commemorated the dedication of the temple of the god Saturn, which took place on 17 December. Over the years, it expanded to a whole week, up to 23 December.

Saturnalia became one of the most popular Roman festivals. It was marked by tomfoolery and reversal of social roles, in which slaves and masters ostensibly switched places.

The Saturnalia was a large and important public festival in Rome. In time, it became one of the most popular Roman festivals. It involved the conventional sacrifices, a couch (lectisternium) set out in front of the temple of Saturn and the untying of the ropes that bound the statue of Saturn during the rest of the year. Besides the p

ublic rites there were a series of holidays and customs celebrated privately. The celebrations included a school holiday, the making and giving of small presents (saturnalia et sigillaricia) and a special market (sigillaria). Gambling was allowed for all, even slaves; however, although it was officially condoned only during this period, one should not assume that it was rare or much remarked upon during the rest of the year. It was a time to eat, drink, and be merry. It was license within careful boundaries; it reversed the social order without subverting it. It was also an opportunity for men to be completely free with their fellowmen, sometimes evolving into homosexual and sometimes also pedophilic relations. The toga was not worn, but rather the synthesis, i.e. colorful, informal "dinner clothes"; and the pileus (freedman's hat) was worn by everyone. The customary greeting for the occasion is a "io, Saturnalia!" — io (pronounced "yo") being a Latin interjection related to "ho" (as in "Ho, praise to Saturn").

Leonardo Dicaprio i s saving the environment, one envelope at a time

i just recently received a piece of mail,
but this want just any old piece of junk mail. it was a parcel sent by an organization by the name of NRDC "natural resources defense council"

the website is full of global warming scam
info, and plenty of great "green" gifts for the holiday season. but best of all, Leonardo Dicaprio had his name printed on the back to let us know that he's doing his part too.
I can only imagine how much Dicaprio
had to "donate" for this publicity stunt.
lets not forget that this is an "organization"

so we can expect any "donation" to be tax
exempt.

But the fun doesn't stop there, the president of the NRDC
Frances G. Beinecke, has received her bachelor’s degree from Yale College and a master’s degree from the Yale School of Forestry

and Environmental Studies.

Frances co-chairs the Leadership Council of the School of Forestry, serves on the advisory board of Yale’s Institute of Biospheric Studies and School of Management, and is a member of the steering committee of the Energy Future Coalition. She has also served on many boards, including Yale University, the World Resources Institute, and, presently, the China-U.S. Center for Sustainable Development and the American Conservation Association.

the NRDC has also drafted, sponsored, and helped California pass the Global Warming Solutions Act, the nation's most ambitious law to limit statewide global warming pollution.

simpsons, hexagonal stargate portals, E.T., and Fantasia

what does that title have to do with this post you ask?
well it just so happens that in the Halloween special this year,
the fine folk at the studio decided to give us all a little treat.

the very first short in the episode featured all of the above.
